Behind the scenes of the audiobook industry:
An exclusive interview with narrator, Holly Holt.
Versatile narrator, Holly Holt, has well over a dozen audiobooks listed at AudioFreebies. She’s a busy mom and works as a trainer, but still finds time to produce an impressive output as a narrator, with almost 200 books under her belt!
Welcome, Holly! Tell us about yourself. How long have you been narrating?
It has been almost 2 years, though I’ve done voice narrating for videos previously for about 10 years.
How many books have you narrated?
Believe it or not, but 195 books! (Sounds impressive eh? But some are SUPER short)
How did you get into the industry?
After making videos professionally for a medical company, I wanted something where I could spend more time with my kids. I have always LOVED books, so I just stumbled upon it and have been as happy as a lamb!
What did you do before you were a narrator, or what else do you do besides narration?
Instructional designer and software trainer.
What’s a typical audiobook production day look like for you?
I work part time and love to do my recording when the kids and hubby are sleeping, so in the middle of the night. Then I edit for about two to three hours in between holding my adorable 9 month old baby boy.
What do you love about what you do?
I am passionate about books, and I really love trying to make the characters come to life for the readers. SO MUCH FUN.
What do you enjoy the least?
Editing isn’t as fun, especially listening to your own voice so much. Jolly ranchers get me through it. Lol.
How much input do you get from the author of a book you’re narrating?
It really varies – some authors are very specific in what they envision or want, so I always try to get as much input as possible, since this amazing story came from them! Many authors just want you to run with it, and that can be a lot of fun too. I just really try to envision the story and the characters and bring that vision to the reader as best I can.
Do you love or hate doing foreign accents?
It’s funny because I love shows like Pride and Prejudice and as such have a fake British accent I’ve used my entire life which people have teased me about, but I’ve used that skill in quite a few books! Accents are a challenge – they are more time consuming but can be super fun.
